AI and The Role of a Professional Content Writer
How much is AI impacting the business of being a writer?
AI is all the rage, and I’ve been in a few meetings lately with writer colleagues who are a little afraid that their work is about to dry up because robots can write content commercially instead of them getting the work. It’s true, I had a few moments of trepidation in this area too when I first started to explore ChatGBT Open AI.
I’m delighted to have started to really look into this though and seeing the potential, but mostly the reassurance of knowing that the work for skilled content writers is perhaps going to be even more valued than ever as a result of robotic technology hitting this industry.
Here’s why I believe that the role of a professional writer is enhanced, not diminished through this advanced technology.
1) The generic writing that AI is capable of generating, is undoubtedly outstanding, but it’s generic. I know that’s also able to be enhanced by asking for ‘put more slang’, or ‘re-write with an old English/gangster/bullet point/ style, but to really own your content, and to be 100% sure that it’s not too close to someone else’s version, you still need to write your own version of the content you want to share.
2) The option to use AI for checklists, to tidy up or rewrite an existing piece of content is great, but is it really your own style, and what happens when it becomes apparent that it is not something you wrote. Will your clients or readers be happy about your short cuts using AI? Maybe, maybe not, but at the very least, you’re going to want to engage a professional writer to look over what your robots have created and make it more reader friendly.
3) When you hear what is played on the radio, and you like the beat, you might want to acknowledge that some songs are started of with the help of modern technology – ie Looping advanced sound engineering, – but that unless a real person is singing it, and a real recording studio and sound engineer has made it all come together, chances are it will never be a hit. It’s the same with a book. An AI option might deliver a good outline even, but you still need a good writer to make it come to life.
Maybe the future of writing professional quality content will eventually rely more on AI technology for editing, outlines, and even the base level of writing for a lot of content creation, but when that happens, the additional input from professional people will be even more necessary, and valued, mostly by readers.
