Let’s talk about content and how to unravel all that mixed up mess of stuff in your head and turn it into something of high value to those you wish to influence, and profile your special expertise to.
Chances are you have so much expertise, and much of it you are far too close to, to be objective about it’s value. That’s very common. We get bored with our own stuff, because we are immersed in it all the time. For example, a teacher might think that using a white board well for explaining something is an easy thing to do, and that how he or she specifically draws diagrams or writes up points to demonstrate something is just what everyone does. Because it’s easy, for them. But learning to use a white board well is not second nature to everyone. And there are some amazing ways to improve on how to draw, design, diagram information that some people are especially great at. But if a teacher or trainer was going to write a book or article about ‘teaching methods that work’ they are likely to overlook the real value of what they know about how to draw great diagrams. But, others might think those skills are exactly what they need to learn. By the way – I searched up ‘how to use a white board for teaching’ and nothing came up on Amazon. That’s just one example of how close we get to our own skills and talents.
Here’s three tips for how to get content out of your head and into a usable form:
That old blank piece of paper - start with a list and see what connects from all the dot points. Group them together.
White board the ideas - get others to comment and join in with the extending of each bubble in a mindmap. Using a white board is great because you can wipe out and redraw as/when needed. Don’t forget to take a photo or two as you go.
Post it notes - list all the ideas on these and assemble them in a grid format, move them into where each sits best amid an overall set of groupings.
Just freewheel the ideas as they flow then put them into a more sustainable or permanent plan. If you’d like to get better at this, then consider grabbing a copy of my book - Start With the Draft to deep dive into creating a solid plan from the unraveling of the cluttered up ideas.
