I loathe those ‘writers retreat’ concepts promoted by publishers wanting to weed out the best from the rest, offering to help you write or publish a book in record time. To me they smack of money making factories where the quality is dubious and the long term results questionable. Mostly this is because they are offering just a book. Everything is about the book.
In the ‘professional experts’ industry however, the book is only a small part of the big picture.
There are countless coaches, trainers, business people of all varieties walking about with the notion of having published a book, so therefore they are a bonafide expert in their field. Compared to someone who had not undertaken the often arduous process of writing a book, yes this is true to some degree. But, a quality book, that properly positions and verifies expertise for an author requires some high quality planning, development of content, excellent structure and editing, and design. In addition, a Call to Action that is thought about at the beginning of the planning, even before the writing starts, with a plan for leveraging that book, extending the content use, and using it to work hard is a whole other level of ‘just a book’.
Another thing that most of the ‘just do a book’ offers miss is the expertise about the necessary speaking and marketing associated with the publishing process. Once the book is out there, how are you going to make it work for you? In my book Authority Island: How some authors become authorities and others just write books, I detailed the typical journey of three different author experiences and relative outcomes. In my everyday work, I focus on helping experts extend on their content sharing across multiple platforms so that their high quality books really do matter to their markets, and to their own marketing processes.
Do you want to ‘write a book’ or verify and position your expertise in 2023?
Why? Why is this the best time for your book to be published? What do you want to happen when you publish? How will it impact on your career? How will it influence your readers?
